Jamala is back! And I think that her Eurovision win made all of us forget that she’s not a big-voiced diva. She’s actually a indie rocker, an alt-goddess with an avant garde voice who occasionally gets stuffed in ball gowns and is forced to belt one out.
So it’s nice to see her go back to her Tori Amos-like roots in Крила, which translates as The Wings:
Jamala’s got a whispery, fluttery voice and – more interestingly – is absolutely nowhere to be found in this video. Instead, she’s substituted by a series of gosh-darn cute kids who are trying to master various athletic activities and are screwing them up.
Seriously, I spent the entire video holding my breath because I was sure someone was going to knock that statue over.
The best part of the video (aside from the horse in a ballroom) was this little girl:
Who decided it was a good idea to give her an epee? What are they doing, training the next round of Eurovision security guards? Maybe Jamala is just ensuring that she never faces another stage invasion ever again, and this whole video is her personal bodyguard training programme. If so, nice, work, Jamala!
