Jessica Mauboy has a big, big, big voice – especially apparent in the ‘We Got Loves’ she belts out at the end. And she’s brought a huge anthem worthy of her voice to Eurovision this year. And Australia has a track record of doing well at Eurovision.
So why am I not feeling this entry more?
Mauboy’s song is a well-crafted, serviceable pop banger – I can see this being played over montages of fans during feel-good wrap ups of playoff teams.
But, as is the case with the British song, I think that Australia has fallen into the trap of asking a dynamite singer to do magic with a not-so-great song.
Watching Mauboy perform this live, I’m struck at just how talented she is. She’s bubbly and fun and throws her whole body into the big notes. She works the crowd, moving all around the stage. And I just think about how transcendent she would be if gifted with a song like Sound of Silence that would have given Mauboy a real challenge and a chance to show off her chops.
TWITTER JOKES YOU SHOULDN’T BOTHER MAKING BECAUSE THEY’VE ALREADY BEEN DONE BETTER BY THE EUROFANDOM: “I didn’t realise Australia was in Europe!” Dude, Australia’s been part of the contest for four years now. Google it and stop parading your ignorance in public.
SHOULD YOU TAKE A PEE BREAK DURING HIS PERFORMANCE: No! Mauboy is just so upbeat that she shouldn’t be missed.
