Georgia – Nutsa Buzaladze – Firefighter

Look, Nutsa Buzaladze has been working hard to pursue her pop girlie dream, and I respect her hustle. She’s competed in singing contests (some televised) in Georgia, Latvia, Russia, Albania, and the United States, and now performs in Dubai. The woman has racked up the air miles to sing for anyone that will have her, and now she’s coming to Eurovision.

And Nutsa has arrived with a girlbop called Firefighter which is …well. Fans of upbeat, danceable diva-based ‘SLAYYYYYYYYY’ pop are going to love this. It comes with an inbuilt dance break, lots of opportunities for vocal trills, and a chantable chorus over some vaguely ethnic instruments. It seems like it’s tailor-made for Eurovision.

Then why, dear readers, do I hate it?

There is one reason, and one reason alone – Eurovision songs have conditioned me to love fire.

Just think about it. What about all those great Eurovision songs that are absolutely reliant on fire: Eleni’s Fuego? The Roop’s On Fire? Paula Seling and Ovi’s Playing With Fire? And how many stagings have been enlived by the heavy-handed application of fire curtains or other pyrotechnics? Even the Eurovision movie is subtitled The Story of Fire Saga.

The last thing I want in my Eurovision is a firefighter. Nutsa’s song just threatens to kill the vibe. Nutsa, babe, you’re not even singing about the hunky type of firefighter with muscles and giant suspenders who might help to give us some eye candy. Instead, you’re just singing about surviving a breakup, when what we really want with that beat is to stoke those flames even higher (something desire).
