Sweden – Hold Me Closer – Cornelia Jakobs

So when all of us were desperately hitting “refresh” in an attempt to get Eurovision 2022 tickets (in my house, two people with multiple devices), a lot of Eurofans were surprised to see that Semi 2 was sold out before anything else.

And the reason?

Hands down, Cornelia Jakobs.

Jakobs has had winner buzz for months, and it’s clear to see why. This woman is pure emotion, with every flounce, shrug, and lean weighted down by masses of yearning and sadness.

And that voice? My god, that raspy voice. That’s a voice that’s already spent hours crying and drinking whiskey and coming to the conclusion that this is the way things have to be.

As a certified banger slut, I shouldn’t love this song. I’m also sure that I’m going to be crying my eyes out when I see this in the arena. There’s so much pain and acceptance wrapped up in these three minutes, and Cornelia Jakobs makes us feel every second of it.

Also – no matter who wins Eurovision, you bet that the evening of Eurovision, so many of use are going to be saying: “Tomorrow will hurt, hurt real bad, because I’m about to lose the best thing I ever had.” This song was MADE for post-Eurovision depression.
